The Boy in Striped Pajamas is a sad story based on the concentration camp, Auschwitz.
Bruno and his family lived in a lovely house in Berlin. It had 5 floors and they had maids, and other people to help. With household chores.
Yet Bruno arrives home from school. To discover he has to move house. Far away from Berlin. His dad had received a promotion from the Fuhrer. Which included a new house.
Bruno hated the house but made friends with the people over the fence from him. Thinking this must what the country side is like. He begins to feel sorry for them.
Will Bruno find out what is exactly on the other side of the fence? What will his parents say?
Bruno is the main character of The Boy in Striped Pajamas. He tells the story from his point of view. He knew nothing about the horrors about concentration camps. His parents shielded him well from it. Thus this story is through an innocent child’s eyes.
The story is not based on a true story. There seem to be a few mistakes in this book. For example the Fuhrer is written as the Fury, and Auschwitz is known as Out-with. I can only think that the author chose these names. As the story is not based on a true story. Thus he did not want to confuse the true stories with his fictional story.
Nonetheless this is an interesting read. It is not very long but different as we see the perspective through Bruno’s eyes.
The book was made into a film, so if you are familiar with the film. You may be encouraged to read this book. A great book to add to your reading list.
